Scope and Content View from south, Buchanan Battery, Flotta, Orkney Islands Buchanan Battery was one of the coast batteries constructed during World War II to defend Hoxa Sound, the main entrance to Scapa Flow, from fast moving hostile craft. This shows the twin six-pounder gun emplacement with its director tower. The upper observation post directed the gun while the lower directed the searchlights. The magazine is in the foreground. Scapa Flow was used by the Royal Navy as a base and fleet anchorage for the Home Fleet during World Wars I and II. After each war the defence equipment was removed leaving the emplacements and other buildings empty and abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
