Scope and Content General view from west, Galtness Battery, Shapinsay, Orkney Islands Galtness Battery was a coast battery built during World War II to cover Broad Sound from fast moving vessels trying to enter Kirkwall Bay. This shows, in the foreground, No 2 searchlight emplacement, with the twin six-pounder, quick-firing emplacement with its director tower behind. The top observation post directed the guns and the bottom observation post directed the searchlights. Orkney and Scapa Flow was used by the Royal Navy as a base and fleet anchorage for the Home Fleet during World Wars I and II. After each war the defence equipment was removed leaving the emplacements and other buildings empty and abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
