Scope and Content General view from south-west, Galtness Battery, Shapinsay, Orkney Islands Galtness Battery was built during World War II as part of the defences of Scapa Flow as a defence against attack through Kirkwall Bay. This battery was built to cover Shapinsay Sound and stop entry of hostile craft into Kirkwall Bay. This shows the twin six-pounder quick-fire gun emplacement with the gun emplacement to the left, the director tower behind and magazine in the foreground. The top observation post directed the gun and the lower one directed the searchlights. Scapa Flow was used by the Royal Navy as a base and fleet anchorage for the Home Fleet during World Wars I and II. After each war the defence equipment was removed leaving the emplacements and other building empty and abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
