Scope and Content Inverness Station, Station Square, Inverness, Highland This station was opened in 1855 by the Inverness & Nairn Railway, which became part of The Highland Railway in 1865. That company enlarged and rebuilt the station, and the main building was again rebuilt by British Railways in the early 1960s, retaining parts of older structures. This shows the southern part of the station, with part of its train shed. The cast iron columns probably date from the 1850s, and the steel structure they support from the early 20th century. The diesel train was for Aberdeen, and the steam train was a Highland Railway centenary special to Forres. The station is unusual in having two sets of platforms, this one serving trains to the east and south, and another for trains to Wick and Thurso, which can only be reached by train from the south-bound platforms by going round a triangle, with two reversals.
