Scope and Content Carron Iron Works, Stenhousemuir, Stirlingshire (Falkirk council area) Carron Company was founded in 1759 to make a range of iron products, using local coal and ironstone in coke-fired blast furnaces. It was the first concern in Scotland to use coke as a fuel for smelting iron. This view shows the interior of the High Foundry, one of the oldest parts of the complex to survive into the mid 20th century. Note the massive timber construction of the roof, characteristic of the 18th and early 19th century. Carron slid into decline from the 1960s, and by 1983 was almost moribund, apart from the bath-manufacturing section, which was still operating in 2001. The High Foundry was demolished in 1983.
