Scope and Content Deanston Cotton Mill, near Doune, Perthshire (Perth and Kinross council area) This mill was established in 1785 by a partnership led by Benjamin Flounders, a Yorkshireman, to spin cotton using Arkwright machinery. It was much expanded in the 1820s by James Finlay and Co, and made cotton goods until 1964-5. This view shows the spinning mill in the centre, with weaving sheds and offices to the left. Behind the modern façade is a remarkable block of vaulted weaving sheds built in the 1820s, like this spinning mill. The complex was powered by four large waterwheels until 1947, when the mill was electrified, using the water from the lade to generate hydro-electricity. In 1965 part of the spinning mill was converted into a whisky distillery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
