Publication drawing; plan of stone circle, the Ring of Brodgar

ORD 89/1

Description Publication drawing; plan of stone circle, the Ring of Brodgar

Date 1929

Collection Records of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), Edinbu

Catalogue Number ORD 89/1

Category Prints and Drawings

Copies SC 345645

Scope and Content Henge monument and stone circle at Ring of Brodgar, Orkney Islands This henge is defined by an impressive rock-cut ditch which surrounds a stone circle. No surface traces of an external bank now remain, and the 1973 excavation failed to find convincing evidence for its existence. Two entrance causeways cross the ditch. This is a plan of the henge and stone circle. The positions of at least 40 stones can be identified, and if they were erected at regular intervals, there are spaces for a further 20. The upright stones are numbered from 1 to 27. Stone 3 bears twig runes. This henge still survives as an earthwork and is situated on gently undulating ground on a narrow strip of land between the Lochs of Stenness and Harray. In 1973, trenches were dug across the presumed bank and ditch, but no finds were recorded. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
