Scope and Content Inverness Station, Station Square, Inverness, Highland This railway station was opened in 1855 by the Inverness & Nairn Railway, and has since been rebuilt and extended on several occasions. Parts of the original building survive at the inner ends of the platforms. This shows the two train sheds that make up the main part of the station. The roofs are probably both of 20th-century construction, but the cast iron column to the left of the locomotive is probably part of the 1855 station. The train was a special one for the Highland Railway centenary. The main station building was rebuilt in the 1960s. It is flanked by the Station Hotel on one side, and by the former Highland Railway headquarters on the other. Various historic fragments are displayed inside the station.
