Scope and Content Yeast factory, Kirkliston Distillery, Path Brae, Kirkliston, Edinburgh In 1969 this factory was used by The Distillers' Co (Malt Products) Ltd, which had, since the 1920s, made extract of malt, a dietary supplement for children, sometimes mixed with cod-liver oil to prevent rickets. This was made by extracting malt, made on site, with hot water, and evaporating most of the water. This shows the factory from the east. It incorporated the remains of the Kirkliston Distillery, including the still house, the building on the left in front of the brick-clad silo block. The rendered building on the right is the main processing building. There was a distillery on this site from 1895 to 1920. It was owned from 1874 by Stewart & Co, one of the founders of The Distillers' Co Ltd in 1877. It became a malt products factory after 1920, and was subsequently sold to Brewing Products UK Ltd, who still own it. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
