Scope and Content Windmill, The Shore and Tower Street, Leith, Edinburgh This building was built in 1686 to designs by Robert Mylne, architect, either to crush oil seed or to crush lead ore for use in making pottery glazes. It later became a signal tower for the harbour. The top was remodelled with battlements in about 1805. This shows the mill in the centre, with the linked tenement built in 1802. To the right is a small marine engineering works, and to the left a seamen's home built in 1883-5. The quay in front of these buildings is part of the pre-1880 port of Leith. This is the largest windmill tower in Scotland, and represents a significant industrial investment. It dates from a time, prior to the Union of the Parliaments, when the Scots Parliament was actively encouraging industrialisation. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
