Scope and Content Lock and bridge, East Old Dock, Leith, Edinburgh Leith's role as the port of south-eastern Scotland was greatly enhanced by the construction in 1800-6 of the first of a pair of large wet docks designed by John Rennie. A second followed, to the west, in 1811-17. This shows the entrance lock at the east end of the East Dock, opened in 1806, with the two-leaf swing bridge which spans it. The original bridge on this site was replaced in 1842-4 by James Leslie. The transit sheds and warehouses which lined the East and West Docks are in the background. The East and West Docks were filled in in the late 1960s, but this lock and bridge survived, and are now scheduled ancient monuments. A bar and restaurant have been established on the south side of the lock. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
