Scope and Content St Leonard's Works, Bothwell Street, Dunfermline, Fife By the mid-19th century Dunfermline had become the leading centre of fine linen manufacture in Scotland, specialising in damask table linen. This was one of the first power-loom factories in this trade, founded in 1851 by Erskine Beveridge & Co, who became the leading producers. This shows the works' chimney with the boiler house in front of it, next to the end of the steam engine house, and one bay of weaving shed on the right. Apart from the weaving shed, all these are probably part of the original works of 1851. After the table linen industry fell into decline, this and other factories in Dunfermline, were taken over for silk manufacture. By 1968 the works was operating on a much reduced scale, and it closed altogether in the 1980s. All the buildings apart from the office block/warehouse have since been demolished.
