Scope and Content Bo'ness Harbour, Bo'ness, Falkirk Bo'ness was, until the port of Grangemouth was created by the Forth & Clyde Canal Co in the late 18th century, the leading port on the upper Forth estuary. It then went into decline, from which it was rescued by the North British Railway, which rebuilt the port facilities, opening them in 1881. This shows the wet dock built by the North British Railway as the key part of their 1881 scheme. At the far end of the dock is the single pair of dock gates that impounded water so that vessels could remain afloat as the tide ebbed. The new facilities were designed primarily for the export of coal, and for the importation of timber, mainly in the form of pit props, used in coal mining to support the roofs of coal seams while the coal was extracted. The port closed in 1955, and has lain derelict since then. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
