Scope and Content Ironing machine, Pullar's Dyeworks, Perth, Perth & Kinross Pullar's Dyeworks was established in the mid-19th century, and the works in Kinnoull Street was built from 1865. As time went on laundering, dry-cleaning and carpet brushing were added to the basic dyeing business. The works was the largest of its kind in Scotland for many years. This machine, known technically as a 'single-roll shell machine', was used for ironing bed sheets and other flat domestic linen. The piece to be ironed was fed over the roller in front, and was dried and ironed by contact with the large heated roller. This type of ironing machine was one of a suite of mechanical laundry equipment developed from the 1880s, which made commercial laundering attractive to middle-class customers. Pullar's had one of the largest such businesses in Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
