Scope and Content Carpet-dyeing machine, Pullar's Dyeworks, Perth, Perth & Kinross Pullar's Dyeworks was established in the mid-19th century, and the works in Kinnoull Street was built from 1865. As time went on laundering, dry-cleaning and carpet brushing were added to the basic dyeing business. The works was the largest of its kind in Scotland for many years. This was one of a number of such machines in the works, used for dyeing carpets for domestic customers. The liquid dye was contained in the wooden box forming the lower part of the machine. The carpet was slung from the beam above, which was rotated to give even dyeing. Machines of this type were common in the dyeing business, but were normally used for dyeing cloth in the piece. Pullar's works probably had the largest carpet dyeing business in Scotland. The rise in availability of cheap fitted carpets brought an end to the business. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
