Scope and Content Carpet-brushing machine, Pullar's Dyeworks, Perth, Perth & Kinross Pullar's Dyeworks was established in the mid-19th century, and the works in Kinnoull Street was built from 1865. As time went on laundering, dry-cleaning and carpet-brushing were added to the basic dyeing business. The works was the largest of its kind in Scotland for many years. This shows the larger of the two carpet-brushing machines in the works in 1967. The carpet was fed into the front of the machine, and beaten by canvas strips on a rotating shaft. The strips can be seen through the slot in the front. The dust was sucked out of the top of the wooden casing. Machines of this type were developed in the late 19th century, and supplanted, for middle-class customers, the hand beating of carpets by domestic servants. The rise in popularity and availability of domestic vacuum cleaners and fitted carpets ended their useful lives. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
