Scope and Content Meadowside Shipyard, No 85 Castlebank Street, Glasgow This shipbuilding yard was laid out in about 1845 by Tod & MacGregor, who had pioneered iron shipbuilding in a yard further up the River Clyde. It passed into the hands of D & W Henderson in 1873, who were in turn acquired in 1916 by Harland & Wolff Ltd of Belfast. It stopped building ships in 1935. This shows the centrepiece of the office block, built for D & W Henderson in 1885, to designs by Bruce & Hay, architects. The platform roof, a French feature, was favoured by these designers. Note the unusual use of common brick for the body of the building, with red sandstone dressings. After shipbuilding ended, Harland & Wolff continued repairing ships, using the dry dock built in 1857-8. This was filled in in 1969, and the site is now used for vehicle storage. The office block survives, although disused. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
