Scope and Content Kirkcaldy Harbour, Kirkcaldy, Fife Kirkcaldy Harbour was an early one, but was rearranged in 1843, and completely rebuilt in 1909, most of the 1909 works being in mass concrete. The harbour now has an inner basin, with a single pair of gates to maintain deep water at low tide, and an outer basin protected by breakwater piers. This shows a small warehouse, and a steel gantry supporting a grain elevator for moving grain from the holds of ships into the concrete silos to the rear. Note the railway tracks, reached by a steeply inclined branch from the main railway through Fife. The harbour remained in use for small coasters until the 1980s. It is now virtually disused, and the quay sides are being developed for housing. The main trade latterly was in barley for the large maltings to the east of the harbour.
