Scope and Content Queen's Dock, Glasgow This dock was built between 1872 and 1880 by the Clyde Navigation Trust. It was the first of Glasgow's large docks, and had first been planned in 1846. It had two large basins, forming four long quays, three of which were lined with transit sheds. Originally there was a swing bridge across the entrance. This shows the entrance to the dock from the south-east. The tower on the left was part of the hydraulic pumping station which powered the swing bridge and some cranes. The tower on the right controlled signals to vessels entering and leaving the dock. By the late 1960s the small and medium-sized cargo vessels which had latterly used the dock were being supplanted by container ships and bulk carriers which could not use it. Accordingly it closed at the end of 1969. It has since been filled in and the Scottish Exhibition Centre built on the site. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
