Scope and Content Crown Ironworks, No 156 North Woodside Road, Glasgow This works was founded in about 1869 by Thomson & Co, railway spring makers, but became better known in the ownership of Louis Sterne & Co Ltd, who took over the spring business, and also became renowned for their emery wheels and refrigeration equipment. This shows part of the frontage of the works to North Woodside Road. The buildings seen here have been altered at several different times, the masonry wall being the oldest part. The length of the frontage, which extends further to the right, gives an idea of the scale of the works. The works closed in about 1971, and has since been demolished. Sternes were the leading Scottish makers of industrial-scale refrigerating equipment, and also developed the 'Sternette' domestic refrigerator, which was made in a factory in Hillington.
