Scope and Content Part of Scotstoun Ironworks (Mechan & Co), Nos 1037-71 South Street, Glasgow This large works was founded in about 1900 by Mechan & Co, engineers and contractors, originally established in 1862. It consisted of a number of ranges of single- and two-storeyed brick ranges surrounding a large courtyard. This shows part of the river frontage of the works, illustrating the character of the buildings surrounding the central courtyard. The small dock to the right was used for loading small coasters. This works specialised in making ships' lifeboats, but also made a range of other products. For example, during World War I, it made munitions. Due to the collapse of the market for traditional ships the works closed in the 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
