Scope and Content Lock 2, Forth and Clyde Canal, Grangemouth, Falkirk The Forth and Clyde Canal was authorised by an Act of Parliament obtained in 1768. Construction started at the Grangemouth end, with John Smeaton as engineer. The cut commenced at a basin off the navigable River Carron. This shows the strap holding the heel-post of one of the bottom gates of Lock 2 into the hollow quoins in which it pivots. The strap is held in place by a cotter which can easily be removed if the gate has to be taken out. The hollow quoins in a lock chamber are stones shaped with a curve which matches the curve on the heel-post of the gate. The pressure of the water on the gate tends to press the post into the hollow quoins, reducing leakage of water. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
