Scope and Content Lock 2, Forth and Clyde Canal, Grangemouth, Falkirk The Forth and Clyde Canal was authorised by an Act of Parliament obtained in 1768. Construction started at the Grangemouth end, with John Smeaton as engineer. The cut commenced at a basin off the navigable River Carron. This shows the gate-paddle mechanism on one of the bottom gates of Lock 2, with the paddle fully open. The paddle was a sluice in the gate, which when open allowed water to flow out of the lock. The ratchet held the paddle open. This mechanism was operated by inserting a lever into one of the holes in the round hub and turning the hub. A gear wheel on the same axle wound the rack up or down. This was a standard Forth and Clyde Canal feature. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
