Scope and Content Lock 2, Forth and Clyde Canal, Grangemouth, Falkirk The Forth and Clyde Canal was authorised by an Act of Parliament obtained in 1768. Construction started at the Grangemouth end, with John Smeaton as engineer. The cut commenced at a basin off the navigable River Carron. This shows the chamber of Lock 2 after this section of canal had been de-watered pending infilling. Note the typical timber gates, and the fine masonry. The gaps in the railings mark the site of a bascule bridge of standard Forth and Clyde Canal type. The bascule bridge over the lock was replaced in the mid-20th century by an electrically-operated one at the lower end (tail) of the lock. Both lock and bridge disappeared when this section of canal was filled in and a warehouse and road built on it. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
