Scope and Content Bascule bridge, Lock 2, Forth and Clyde Canal, Grangemouth, Falkirk The Forth and Clyde Canal was authorised by an Act of Parliament obtained in 1768. Construction started at the Grangemouth end, with John Smeaton as engineer. The cut commenced at a basin off the navigable River Carron. This shows the bascule bridge at the east end of Lock 2, which replaced a standard Forth and Clyde Canal wooden bridge over the lock chamber. This bridge was electrically operated from the control cabin on the left. This view was taken before the Grangemouth end of the canal was filled in. A new road, with services under it, was built along part of the route, and a warehouse was constructed on the site of the basin between Locks 1 and 2. This bridge was demolished.
