Scope and Content Entrance, Forth and Clyde Canal, Grangemouth, Falkirk The Forth and Clyde Canal was authorised by an Act of Parliament obtained in 1768. Construction started at the Grangemouth end, with John Smeaton as engineer. The cut commenced at a basin off the navigable River Carron. This shows the entrance basin at low tide, with the first lock on the canal. The canal had closed in 1962, and already a pipe had been taken across the lock. The building in the background is part of the Grangemouth shipyard. This photograph was taken immediately before the Grangemouth end of the canal was filled in. A new road, with services under it, was built along part of the route, and a warehouse was constructed on the site of the basin between Locks 1 and 2. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
