Description Dumfries, Old Bridge View from ESE showing SE front of Old Bridge with Weir in foreground

Date 22/8/1967

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 602226

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Old Bridge, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway This bridge was originally built in about 1430-32, and has been repaired on many occasions. The eastern half was rebuilt in 1620, after a collapse, and three of the 1620 spans were demolished in 1794, after most traffic had been diverted to the New Bridge, opened in the previous year. This shows the bridge from the south-east. In the foreground is the weir, or caul, which supplied water to Dumfries Mill, which marks the tidal limit of the River Nith, and protects the piers of the old bridge from scouring. This bridge is now a footbridge, and the toll-house at the west end is a museum. It is also known as Dervorguilla's Bridge, after the mother of John Balliol and founder of Sweetheart Abbey, who may well have endowed an earlier bridge on this site.
