Scope and Content West entrance, Aberdeen Football Club, Pittodrie Park Stadium, Pittodrie Street, Aberdeen Pittodrie Park Stadium in Aberdeen is the home ground of Aberdeen Football Club, popularly known as 'The Dons'. The Club was formed in 1903 when the original Aberdeen Football Club amalgamated with two other local clubs, Victoria United and Orion. 'Pittodrie' means 'dung hill' as the site was originally a rubbish tip. This shows the west entrance of the stadium, looking from the north-west, with Gallowhills gas holder in the background. This entrance leads to the Merkland Stand, now known as the Family Stand, which comprises 3,551 seats. This part of the structure was rebuilt in the 1970s, together with the Merkland Stand which was also roofed over. The Merkland Stand is unusual in that sometimes supporters of both teams will watch a game from it, rather than being segregated. In 1978, Pittodrie became the UK's first all-seated stadium. Today it is the third largest ground, after Celtic and Rangers, in the Scottish Premier League, with a seating capacity of 22,199. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
