Scope and Content Castle Hotel, The Square, Greenlaw, Berwickshire This large inn was built when Greenlaw was the county town of Berwickshire, and presumably the focal point for a number of stagecoach services, though the inn was obviously also designed to serve the private coaches of local gentry. This view shows the hotel from the north west. It faces the County Buildings of 1829, hence the architectural elaboration. It is flanked by long ranges of stables and coaches, provision on an unusual scale. Greenlaw lost its county-town status in 1853 to more populous Duns, and has since remained a small community. This hotel is disproportionately large and has changed hands on many occasions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
