Scope and Content View from south-west of gun emplacement, Cara Battery, North Cara, South Ronaldsay, Orkney Islands Cara Battery is one of the coast batteries built during World War II to defend Scapa Flow. This battery covered Water Sound which was later blocked by one of the Churchill Barriers. This shows No 1 12-pounder gun emplacement. Braithwaite water tank sections have been used as shuttering for the concrete, hence the embossed 'decoration'. The Battery Observation Post can just be seen on the left. Scapa Flow was used by the Royal Navy as a base and fleet anchorage for the Home Fleet during World Wars I and II. After each war the defence equipment was removed leaving the emplacements and other buildings empty and abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
