Scope and Content Staircase at ground floor, Pollok House, Pollok Park, Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow, from south-east This photograph shows the staircase from ground-floor level. Most of the portraits lining the staircase are of the Hapsburg family, and were probably collected by the 8th Baronet, Sir William Stirling Maxwell (1818-78). The grandfather clock dates from 1764, and has the Maxwell family crest engraved on the dial. It is an astronomical clock, showing phases of the moon, and is a very fine example of Scottish clock making. The main staircase runs only between the ground and first floors. All other floors are reached via a service stair that leads to the attic from the service quarters in the basement. Pollok House was built in the mid-18th century, and was the home of the Maxwell family. It is now open to the public through The National Trust for Scotland, although the Maxwells retain private apartments within the house. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
