Scope and Content Yoker Power Station, Yoker, Glasgow The Clyde Valley Electrical Power Co Ltd was formed in 1901 to supply electricity to consumers outside the area supplied by local authorities in the Glasgow area. It built two coal-fired power stations: this one, opened in 1905, and one at Motherwell. This shows the power station from the north-east, with the railway to Rothesay Dock (which also served the power station) in the foreground. The two sets of steel chimneys served two generations of boilers. After the National Grid was set up in 1927 some of the larger generating stations were selected as 'base load' stations. Yoker was one, and was enlarged and rebuilt during its life for that purpose. It closed in the 1970s and has since been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
