Scope and Content Harbour Branch Bridge, Ayr (South Ayrshire council area) This five-span steel X-truss (double Warren) bridge was built in 1899 by the Glasgow and South Western Railway to carry a branch railway to the south side of the harbour, where there was also a small shipbuilding yard. This view shows the bridge from the north west, The bridge was on a curve to allow a smooth route to the south quay. Because of its proximity to the centre of Ayr, decorative cast iron casings were applied to the joins between the trusses. By 1966 the bridge had been out of use for a number of years, and it was demolished in the 1980s, leaving the masonry and brick piers in position. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
