Scope and Content New Bridge, Ayr (South Ayrshire council area) This five-span masonry arch bridge was built in 1878-9.to designs by B and E Blyth, engineers, Edinburgh, to replace a bridge designed by Robert Stevenson, which had become defective. This view shows the bridge from the south west, Note the heavy rustic treatment off the sandstone masonry of the lower part of the bridge, contrasting with the highly-finished granite parapet. The arches are very flat, and the piers unusually slender. When it was constructed, this bridge carried all the road traffic through the town. Though now bypassed for through traffic, it still carries heavy local traffic. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
