Scope and Content Shawfield Chemical Works, Glasgow Road, Rutherglen, Lanarkshire (Glasgow City council area) This works was founded in 1810 by J and J White as a soda works, close to the head of navigation on the Clyde. Later in the 19th century it became a specialist maker of compounds of chromium, in which it developed an international reputation. This view shows a large sectional cast iron water tank on the east side of Glasgow Road. The tank segments were made by the Glasgow engineers Turnbull, Grant and Jack in 1879. The masonry wall with its cast iron tieplates was probably earlier. The works, originally on the east side of the road, was eventually on both sides, and latterly all operations were concentrated on the west side. The works was latterly operated by Associated Chrome Chemicals, but has been closed and dismantled. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
