Scope and Content Cotton-spinning mill, No 121 Carstairs Street, Glasgow This mill was one of a pair erected 1884-9 by the Glasgow Cotton Spinners Co Ltd, and was designed by Joseph Stott, an Oldham mill designer. The company was modelled on the joint-stock spinning concerns which were proving successful in Oldham. This shows the Carstairs Street block from the north-west. The parallel block in Swanston Street can just be seen on the left. The mill is much deeper from front to back than earlier Glasgow mills, and is built of red Lancashire brick. Despite initial success, the Glasgow Cotton Spinners Co Ltd did not survive the depression of the inter-war years. By 1967 it was being used for cardboard carton manufacture, for which its fire-resistant construction was particularly suitable. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
