Scope and Content Shawfield Chemical Works, Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire This was one of the largest early chemical works in Scotland, and was founded c.1810 by J & J White. The firm eventually specialised in making compounds of chromium, used in dyeing and tanning. This shows part of the works from the Glasgow side of the River Clyde, with the wharf used by the firm in its early days on the waterfront. By 1967, the active part of the works was behind the buildings at the upper level in this view. By 1967 the works was owned by Associated Chrome Chemicals Ltd. It has since been closed and dismantled. Whites unfortunately had a poor reputation for industrial health: chromium compounds can produce ulceration. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
