Scope and Content West Mill, Dean Path, Edinburgh This large mill was built in 1805-6 as a flour mill at a time of high grain prices during the French Wars. It was a double mill, with two waterwheels in the centre, each driving its own set of millstones, and a linked granary block to the rear. This shows the main mill range from the south, with the granary range to the rear. Note the arches for the tailraces of the waterwheels. The wall in the foreground was part of another mill, converted to a distillery in 1881 and closed in 1922. In common with other similar mills in Scotland, West Mill became obsolete in the late 1870s due to the introduction of roller milling. In use as a store for many years, it was eventually converted into flats, one of the first such ventures in Edinburgh. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
