Scope and Content West Mill, Dean Path, Edinburgh This large mill was built in 1805-6 as a flour mill at a time of high grain prices during the French Wars. It was a double mill, with two waterwheels in the centre, each driving its own set of millstones, and a linked granary block to the rear. This shows the main mill range from the south-east, with the granary range on the right. Note the arches for the tailraces of the waterwheels, and the exposed skew of the firewall separating the two sections of the mill. Like other stone-grinding flour mills in Scotland, West Mill was made obsolete in the late 1870s by the introduction of roller milling. After a long period of marginal use it was converted into flats, one of the first such ventures in Edinburgh. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
