Scope and Content Lancefield Engine Works, No 181 Lancefield Street, Glasgow In 1912, Harland & Wolff Ltd incorporated a number of old buildings into their diesel engine works. The oldest of these buildings was the office of David Napier's Lancefield Engine Works, which dates back to 1821. This shows Napier's offices, dating from before the 1850s, and in a mixture of architectural styles. Napier's workshops were behind this frontage. On the left is part of a large block of workshops built for Harland & Wolff. The London & Glasgow Engineering & Iron Shipbuilding Co, acquired the Lancefield works from William Beardmore & Co in 1905, and re-equipped it. It was greatly extended by Harland & Wolff between the wars. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
