Scope and Content Water of Ayr and Tam o'Shanter Hone (whetstone) Works, Stair, East Ayrshire This works was converted from the earlier Milton Mill by a company formed in 1902 to make whetstones, which had been manufactured across the river for many years. A water turbine was installed to generate electricity to drive the whetstone machinery. This shows the complex from the north-east. The former Milton Mill is to the left of the cottages, with the whetstone workshops to the left. The cottages were probably built for employees of the hone works. 'Tam o'Shanter' and 'Water of Ayr' are trade names for two different grades of fine whetstone. The Water of Ayr stone was mined on the opposite bank of the River Ayr. The works continued to operate until the 1990s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
