Scope and Content Wilson Hall and No 15 Bridge Street, Catrine, East Ayrshire Catrine grew up round a large cotton-spinning mill established in 1787 by Sir Claud Alexander of Ballochmyle and David Dale, Scotland's leading late 18th-century industrialist. It was planned on a grid, but the buildings varied considerably in character. This shows the 1947 mill from the south-east. The chimney served the boiler house which supplied steam for heating. The bridge on the left leads to the Brown Institute, and the house on the right is Catrine House. The original mill wheel of 1787 was replaced in 1827 by two 15.24m wheels, designed by William Fairbairn. The waterworks needed to operate these wheels included lengthening the tailrace to the point seen in this view. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
