Scope and Content Lower Dens Flax Spinning Mill, St Roque's Lane/Princes Street, Dundee (Dundee City council area) This mill was built to spin linen yarn for weaving in the Upper Dens Works, across the road to the north. Both buildings belonged to Baxter Brothers. The designer of the Lower Dens was Peter Carmichael, the firm's engineer. This view shows the main mill from the south, with the end of the Upper Dens Works at the top of the lane to the left. The mill was designed as a showpiece, for the Dundee millowners were rivals for the most spectacular buildings. The Dens works together formed the largest flax mill in the world in their day. They closed in 1978, and the Upper Dens works has been converted into flats. This mill is currently (2001) in low-grade multiple industrial use. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
