Scope and Content New Bridge, Musselburgh, Midlothian (East Lothian council area) This bridge was designed by John Rennie to carry traffic on the main Edinburgh to London post road, replacing a humped-back medieval bridge. It was widened in 1924-5 to cope with increasing motor traffic. This view shows the bridge from the north west. The flatness of the arches is remarkable, a feature to reduce the gradient of the road to a minimum for horse-hauled traffic. Note, too the detailing of the masonry to reduce the apparent bulk of the bridge When the bridge was widened in 1924-5 the original facades of the Rennie bridge were carefully retained.
