Scope and Content St Enoch Station, St Enoch Square, Glasgow (Glasgow City council area) The first part of this large station was completed to a temporary terminus at Dunlop Street in 1870. The main station with its dramatic arched roof was completed in 1876, and the hotel and offices in 1879. It was extended to the south in 1898-1902. This view shows the signal box which controlled traffic movements in and around the station. It was installed in the 1930s when the semaphore signals were replaced by a colour light signal scheme, the first in Scotland. The station was closed to rail traffic in 1966, and was used for a number of years as a car park before being replaced by the St Enoch Centre, a shopping mall with, curiously, a glazed overall roof.
