Scope and Content Loudoun Mill (corn), Newmilns, East Ayrshire Ayrshire agriculture was transformed in the late 18th century by the treatment of acid soils with lime. This allowed cereals to be grown on a large scale, and many of the county's water-powered corn mills were, like this one, rebuilt. This shows the large low-breast paddle wheel which drove the mill, with the waste water sluice fully open, discharging the water from the lade back into the River Irvine, which can be seen in the left background. The mill was extended in yellow brick in 1914, and this wheel was probably installed at that time. It was about 0.9m by 6.1m, and was one of the largest corn mill wheels in south-west Scotland. It was scrapped in the late 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
