Scope and Content Bonawe Iron Works, Taynuilt, Argyll (Argyll and Bute council area) Bonawe Iron Works was established in 1752 by the partners of the Newland Co, a Lake District charcoal-fuelled iron-smelting works. They were attracted to Bonawe by abundant water-power and woodland for charcoal burning. This view shows the blast furnace, with the charging house to the right. The furnace was set into a slope, with the charcoal and ore sheds above, which eased the charging of raw materials. The furnace has been encased to facilitate conservation. This photograph was taken when the repair of the buildings had begun, in anticipation of taking the site into State care. The works had been closed since the 1870s, though some of the buildings had been used for agricultural purposes. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
