Scope and Content Blast furnaces, Carron Iron Works, Stenhousemuir, Stirlingshire (Falkirk council area) This works was founded in 1759 by Carron Company, and was subsequently much altered and extended. This blast-furnace plant was built in the 1890s to replace the original furnace layout, which had itself been altered over the years. This view shows the plant from the south east, looking over a bridge linking the old works with the area to the south. The four hand-charged blast-furnaces are in the centre, flanked by dome-topped hot-blast stoves. This plant was built to produce foundry pig iron for use in the company's foundries, and in other foundries in the Falkirk area. Iron from these furnaces was also poured directly into moulds to make tunnel segments, for instance for lining Tube tunnels. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
