Scope and Content Glasgow Cotton Spinners' Co Ltd mill, Swanston Street, Dalmarnock, Glasgow (City of Glasgow council area) This is one of two large brick cotton-spinning mills built by the Glasgow Cotton Spinners' Co Ltd, on similar lines to mills being put up in Oldham, Lancashire, by limited companies, and designed by the Oldham architect Joseph Stott. This view shows the Swanston Street mill, with a corner of the other mill, in Carstairs Street. These mills were very advanced in construction, with hollow-tile floors supported on cast iron columns. Note the chimney, one of the tallest in Glasgow. By 1966 these mills were being used for cardboard carton manufacture. This one has since been demolished, but the Carstairs Street mill is still standing. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
