Scope and Content Coal train, Waterside, near Patna, Ayrshire (East Ayrshire council area) After the deep mining of coal in the Doon Valley ceased with the closure of Pennyvenie colliery in 1978 the area to the east and north of the former ironworks site was used for stockpiling coal from open-cast mines elsewhere in Ayrshire. This view shows a Rolls Royce diesel shunting locomotive belonging to the National Coal Board Opencast Executive with a train of hopper wagons for transporting coal. Part of a stockpile can be seen to the right. Some at least of the stocking areas were platforms which had been constructed in the 19th century for calcining ironstone before charging it into the blast furnaces in the Dalmellington Iron Works. Calcining (burning) the stone drove off impurities. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
